Wrestling Federation of India Faces Suspension Amid Controversial Leadership Change

New Delhi, India – In a surprising turn of events, the Sports Ministry of India has decided to suspend the recently formed Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) led by Sanjay Singh. The suspension comes on grounds of transparency and other concerns, just days after Singh assumed the role of WFI president.

Sanjay Singh, formerly the Vice President of the UP Wrestling Association, secured a significant victory in the WFI elections, winning 40 votes against his rival Anita Sheoran's seven. This outcome disappointed prominent wrestlers such as Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, and Sakshi Malik, who had been vocal in their opposition to the previous WFI president, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

Brij Bhushan Singh had faced accusations of sexual harassment, prompting protests from the wrestling community. However, with Sanjay Singh's election, concerns arise about the continuity of promised reforms.

Wrestlers Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik expressed their dissatisfaction with the election results, highlighting the government's unfulfilled promises. Despite assurances that Brij Bhushan's associates would not be allowed in the elections, the elected president is seen as closely associated with him.

Sakshi Malik, a Commonwealth Games gold medalist, made a significant announcement, declaring her retirement from wrestling in response to Sanjay Singh's victory. She emphasized the need for a female president to prevent harassment in the sport.

The wrestling community, particularly Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat, voiced disappointment over the government's failure to uphold its commitment. They expressed concerns about potential exploitation faced by upcoming women wrestlers.

As the controversy unfolds, the wrestling fraternity is left questioning the future of the sport in India, with Sakshi Malik's emotional retirement marking a poignant moment in this unfolding saga. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
